Is Motorcycle Insurance Required in Los Angeles, CA?

A quick answer to the question all bike owners have asked: “Is motorcycle insurance required in Los Angeles?”

In California, auto insurance is required. When a driver gets behind the wheel of his or her car, to abide by the law he or she needs to have certain levels of liability coverage. But is it the same for motorcycles? Is motorcycle insurance required in Los Angeles? Let’s take a look.

California state law requires that every registered vehicle be insured. So the question is not whether or not motorcycles need insurance, but whether or not motorcycles need to be registered. And the answer to the latter is generally yes. You can use this quick guide to double-check whether or not you need to register your vehicle. If your engine size is greater than 150cc, though, it’s safe to assume you’ll need to get it registered.

Now that you know your bike needs to be registered, you also know it needs to be insured. How much coverage do you need, exactly? The minimum liability coverage required for motorcycles is actually that same as it is for cars in our state. So that means that in order to be legally compliant, you need:

  • $15,000 of liability coverage for injury or death you cause to a single person.
  • $30,000 of liability coverage for injury or death you cause to more than one person.
  • $5,000 of liability coverage for property damage you cause.

When shopping for your motorcycle policy, make sure that you buy coverage that hits those numbers. Want another legal tip? Make sure you wear a helmet – California state law requires it for all operators and passengers!
